Women’s lax has sights on playoffs

Last year the Walsh Jesuit women’s lacrosse team (1-1) had their best season in program history since their 2006 state canmpuonship victory. The 2016 team made it to the District Final, and they return this year as hungry as ever to get even farther in the playoffs.

Head Coach Julie Hudec noted, “Our goal every year is to win states, and we also want to constantly improve and have fun while doing it.” Senior captain Christine Hughes added, “Last year we lost to Hathaway Brown and, through great leadership, it has motivated us to get as far or farther this year.”

Good leadership is one of the most valuable qualities this team has. With only four seniors, the athletes have learned from their leaders and become better because of it. Mary Claire Reagan, another senior captain, observed, “We lead by example, and [the team learns] from us because they know we all have so much potential.”

This year’s team has a few other key strengths as well. Coach Hudec stated, “They play very well together and get along very well, and they have a team first attitude.” Mary Claire added, “We have a lot of speed which will help on both the attack and on the defense.” But, as for challenges, junior attacker Megan Hissong admitted, “We are a very young team, but with the young players comes fresh new talent and energy.”

This season looks to be very exciting for the Lady Warriors. Goalie Ellen Hudock was asked why the Walsh community should support them, and she said, “We want the fans to come share the enthusiasm that we have to win.”
