The Walsh Jesuit men’s golf team celebrated a notable victory at the North Coast League Championship and, at the same event held September 24-26, the league named head coach Bill Reilly Coach of the Year.

Coach Reilly was ecstatic about the award and the team’s win, noting,  “I am humbled to win any awards. Any and all are a reflection of this great team.”

Contributing to the North Coast League win, Zak Supelak, a senior, scored a par 72 on the course, tying individually for second overall. Seniors Conner Evans and Brennan Komos finished with two and three over par, respectively. The three others on the team rounded out the championship with an 80 by  freshman Colton Levey, an 85 by  senior John Burns and an 86 from  Matt Flinch.

The Warriors maintain their strong reputation in the 2016 season. For the fifth straight year, they qualified for the State Golf Tournament, with four seniors and one freshman picking up where the team left off last year. Coach Reilly admitted to some concern for this season because three of the top five players graduated last year, but the 2016 team promptly put his doubts to rest. In fact, the Warriors are averaging better than last year’s team.

The varsity claimed three more championships and are scoring five shots better than last year. In fifteen matches, they placed first five times, second three times, and third four times. The Warriors ended a match in fourth place only once and sixth place twice.

The team continues to make a name for themselves and are regarded as one of the premier teams in Northeast Ohio. They headed to Columbus with a solid lineup. Senior John Burns stated, “We have a great group of guys with lots of talent, and we’ve had a successful year.” Brennan Komos (‘17) added, “We’ve shown a lot of consistency and potential.”

We’ve shown a lot of consistency and potential, and we are looking forward to the second half of the year.
