Louisa May Alcott wrote, “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.” In this spirit of determination, Walsh Jesuit’s Centerstage Theatre proudly presents Little Women, a musical that sails into the heart of adolescence and family bonds.
Directed by Mr. Matia, the performance based on Alcott’s novel sets sail at the David J. Banks Theater on April 12th, 13th, and 19th at 7 PM, with matinees on April 14th and 21st at 2 PM. The cast invites the community to journey through the timeless themes of love, ambition, and the unbreakable strength of family, all portrayed with a fresh, modern way.
Mr. Matia shares his excitement and vision for the production, “I really liked Little Women as my selfish reason, and it is a show that is really good about sharing timeless lessons. The story of sisters growing up together is so relatable. It is cool that we get to do a classic piece of literature in a modern way.”
Junior Corinne Slawienski, stepping into the role of Marmee, talks about the unique bond the cast shares, “My favorite part about being in the cast is being able to hang out with my friends every day and make creative choices–and stupid jokes.”
Senior Jack Judge has played many different roles in his time with Centerstage and other theaters. Having played mainly comical roles, he welcomes the chance to try something new. “The best part about being Laurie is being able to try something new and be a more dynamic character. I am used to playing a comic relief character, so being able to branch out to a role like Laurie has been really interesting,” he shared.
For freshman Tessa Patton, taking on the role of Jo March is exhilarating and challenging, “I feel extremely honored to be playing the lead role of Jo March as a freshman. Essentially, it’s like putting a freshman on varsity and I couldn’t be more thankful for that opportunity. Jo has already taught me so much and I can’t wait to keep learning throughout the rest of the rehearsal process.”
Junior Kali Boyd, cast as Beth, recalls the moment she discovered she won the role, “I was at a brunch when I found out I got the role. I was in public, dressed up all nice and I was screaming and jumping for joy with my mom. I was ecstatic when my dad sent me the text because my entire family was stalking our emails, but it sent to him before it sent to me.”
The commitment to the show is evident, especially among the ensemble members. Junior Makenna Johnson comments on the long hours and intensive preparation. “I spend more time in the theater than my own house,” she said.
As the opening night approaches, the senior members of the cast look back on their high school theater journey with gratitude and sense that it is bitter sweet.
“This cast is very together, and since I am a senior, I know everyone well and am valuing every day I get with them before I leave for college,” shared Jack, echoing this common sentiment among those graduating this year.
Little Women promises to be a highlight of Centerstage’s theatrical season because it embodies the passion and dedication of the cast and crew. As they bring this beloved story to the stage, they invite the audience to see the March sisters and themselves in a new light.
