Fair Trade Christmas Boutique Returns to WJ

The annual Fair Trade Christmas Boutique will open its door in the Commons starting December 7. The sale will be Wednesday during lunch periods and at night from 6 to 9 pm. The evening event is hosted by the Mother’s Club and will feature appetizers and desserts. An assortment of handmade Fair Trade jewelry, purses, scarves, soaps, ornaments, coffee, chocolate, wood carvings from the Holy Land and more will be on sale.

Seven to eight vendors, including Walsh Jesuit’s very own Fair Trade Club, will offer products from around the world. The WJ Fair Trade Club will feature assorted coffees and chocolate tastings. Miss Knox, who is helping organize this year’s sale, noted, “A lot of our vendors are very excited to come back because they always receive a lot of sales through Walsh Jesuit.”

Shopping fair trade is one of the easiest ways to reward workers around the world. Julianna Thompson, a member of the Walsh Jesuit Fair Trade Club, observed, “Buying Fair trade items is a great thing to do because with every purchase you are supporting the rights of workers.”

Fair Trade companies ensure that their workers are paid a living wage that enables them to provide for their families. Another Fair Trade Club member, Julia Mullins, expressed that “shopping fair trade is a chance for Americans to use their consumer power to make an ethical decision that benefits laborers around the world.”

Students will be able to shop and browse during study hall and lunch periods. Junior Julia Dziewisz exclaimed, “I cannot wait for the Fair Trade sale! I look forward to the vendors coming every year because they have the best gifts!”
