Of the retreat, senior Nate Stocker shared, “As a Boy Scout, I’m glad I can share my love of nature and God to freshmen in the hopes that they too will fall in love with God and nature. I think that’s pretty neat.”

The freshmen thought and prayed about many topics as they hiked and when the seniors shared their talks. They considered how they have changed since starting at Wash Jesuit and how they can see God in ways other than formal worship. They learned how to begin to look for God in all things.

Senior retreat leader Alex Davessar gives a speech near the trailhead as the day begins. Of the retreat Alex said,“I believe that the retreat was tremendously beneficial for both the freshmen and the leaders; we each learned from each other. It is my hope that this retreat has encouraged them to become involved with campus ministry further.”

In addition to speaking to group members and leaders, the freshmen hiked silently for a good distance to process the events of day and observe what thoughts and feelings surfaced during this time with God away from school.

Mitchell McGreal, ‘18, reflected, "It was wonderful to see a generation so exposed to technology immerse themselves in nature in order to see God in new ways.”

Despite the fog, the freshmen were able to find clarity through nature and the leaders' talks on the retreat. Through the many group discussions and reflections, the students were able to learn how to further develop their own relationships with God.

On Friday September 15, 70 freshmen hiked through Cuyahoga Valley National Park to learn how to deepen their relationships with God, themselves, and each other through nature during the annual Freshman Hiking Retreat.

The group poses for a photo near a CVNP Railway tunnel. The day left many feeling closer to God and classmates. Several also shared that the experience made them want to do more. Freshmen retreatant Benjamin Foltz shared, "After this retreat, I feel more compelled to get involved [with Campus Ministry].”

Freshmen retreatant Olivia Gross shared, “My favorite part of the retreat was when we split up into smaller groups and got to learn facts about our other group members.”

The freshmen heard talks about how the seniors changed since their own freshmen year, and how they have learned to see God in all things, an important aspect of Ignatian Spirituality.
