Walsh Jesuit’s Women’s Field Hockey Club

The arrival of women’s field hockey to Walsh Jesuit has created quite a buzz. In its second year, with more than 30 girls returning from last year, the team has enjoyed a turnout large enough to support both varsity and junior varsity club teams.

The Warriors have created a close bond that continues to help them this season.  Senior Evelyn Masturzo says, “The teams’ chemistry is better than [the football] squad’s chemistry.”  As a result, the girls work hard and motivate each other to be better players on and off the field.

Each girl brings determination and a willingness to work hard.  “I’m dedicated to the sport,” asserts Grace Reminder (’17).  The club would not have the success they experience if it were not for the devotion to become better at what they do.

In the first game of the season on September 10,  the women came out with a hard-fought tie against Laurel, whom they played earlier in a pre-season scrimmage which they lost 0-8.  The Warriors were determined to show they had improved. Coach Gary Rybka observed, “We progressed as a team by learning the skills that will be necessary to compete at this high level. It is something the girls must always be working on, and we will see the fruits as we move on.”

Women’s field hockey is a club, not interscholastic, sport at Walsh Jesuit.  Coach Rybka added, “The hope for the future is that we can become a varsity level team.  After that, we start playing for a state championship.”

Not only do the girls love the fast-paced, but the fans do, too.  “I never miss a game,” says senior Jace Burke.  There are many more fans just like Jace with the desire to support the girls.
