March 8, 2017
The 89th Academy Awards presentation, which took place on February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theater, was filled with humor, touching moments, and a jaw-dropping error. The show was hosted for the first time by comedian Jimmy Kimmel. To the delight of the audience, he incorporated many of his talk show skits into the ceremony .
Justin Timberlake kicked off the show by performing his Oscar-nominated song “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” from the movie Trolls. Next, Kimmel introduced a few of the nominees, poked fun at long-time rival and friend Matt Damon, and joked about Meryl Streep being “overrated.” Senior Alyssa Dabrowski stated, “I love Jimmy Kimmel! I think he is so funny, and I loved when candy and snacks dropped from the ceiling!”
The first award went to Mahershala Ali who won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Moonlight. Some other notable first-time winners included Viola Davis, Casey Affleck, and Emma Stone. The most awards of the night were earned by the movie “La La Land,” which took home six Oscars including Best Actress (Emma Stone). Kara Hines, a WJ senior, agreed with the Academy’s pick, noting, “I really thought Emma Stone deserved the Oscar for Best Actress! She never disappoints in any role!”
Throughout the ceremony, Kimmel did not fail to fill the audience with laughter. During his opening monologue, he poked fun at the nominees, President Trump, and himself. As the show progressed, he continued to have fun with the audience by dropping candy, popcorn, and other snacks from the ceiling. More than halfway through the show, Kimmel pranked a tour bus by bringing the tourists into the show and allowing them to meet celebrities like Meryl Streep, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and others. A few even held Mahershala Ali’s Oscar.
The finale of the 89th Annual Academy Awards was one to remember. The final and most prestigious award of the night, Best Picture, was awarded to the wrong film. After a mix-up with the winner’s envelope, obviously confused presenter Warren Beatty announced, “La La Land.” As the ecstatic cast and crew of La La Land gave their acceptance speeches, the producers of the show realized their mistake and announced that Moonlight had actually won. Senior Marisa Bradley exclaimed, “It was cruel! I loved La La Land and definitely thought they deserved it!”
Neverthless, the night was filled with many highlights. Jimmy Kimmel brought humor to the award show and kept it interesting throughout. The 89th Annual Academy Awards was definitely one to remember!
