Senior Clark Nemer hits a shot on hole 12 at the Ohio State Scarlet Course.

A jubilant Walsh Jesuit men’s golf team headed to the Ohio State Scarlett Course on October 22 and 23 as they competed in the State Championship.

Prior to departure for Columbus, senior captain Clark Nemer said, “Beginning with tryouts in the summer, we each had made our list of goals, and no matter how we played all season, the ultimate goal was to be down at States. All the practices and preparations that we had done in hopes to get down to Columbus finally paid off, and I couldn’t be more excited to be going once again.”

Only four teams made it out of the District Tournament, and junior Josh Weiner’s strong round contributed to the Warriors making the final four. He said, “My goal for the day was to just go out there and have fun but play really well to give the team a shot at making it out.”

Josh Weiner had fired a low round of 70, or one under par, at Pine Hills, his best round of the year. This helped the team qualify by one shot. Also playing well were junior Tommy Kadair, who shot a 78, and Clark Nemer, who fired a 79. Parker Kufel, a senior, completed the foursome   with 83. The five-man role played a large part to the team’s success this season, as Jack Mercer was able to claim this spot as the team headed to the post season. With a career round 72, Jack helped the team win the New Albany Co-Ed Invitational.

With ten years’ experience leading the Warriors, Coach Bill Reilly said, “This year’s team had something special that other teams have not had in the past. This group of gentlemen has created a bond so close with each other which is truly hard to find. I can teach these guys with all the swing tips in the world, but the drive in them is something that I cannot teach….”

The Warriors competed against the top eleven teams in the state. Scores were Josh Weiner, 78-79; Clark Nemer, 79-78; Parker Kufel, 82-82; Jack Mercer, 86-94; and Tommy Kadair 88-93. This was good enough to place tenth out of more than 200 teams in the state.
