CenterStage Theatre is preparing its annual spring musical, Freaky Friday, a modern comedy about a mother and daughter who magically switch bodies and are forced to see life from each other’s perspective.
This is the first time Walsh Jesuit has produced the musical. Director Mr. Matia said the show was chosen because of how relatable its story is for students and families.
“We picked it because it tells relevant high school story. It relates to the relationship between parents and kids,” Matia said.
Matia added that the musical stood out because it reflects the experiences of teenagers today. “We picked a musical that takes place in the modern day and focused on the stories and perspectives of teenagers. We made sure it reflected the experiences of our cast and crew.”
The musical follows Katherine and her daughter Ellie, who switch lives after fighting over a magical hourglass. As they navigate each other’s daily lives, they must learn to understand one another before the switch becomes permanent. Freaky Friday is based on the classic story originally written by Mary Rodgers and later adapted into several Disney films.
Junior Maggie Luoma, who plays Katherine, said rehearsals have been going well as the cast prepares for opening night. “Rehearsals are going extremely well! We’re working on reviewing now and have gotten through all the shows’ choreography, scenes, and songs. Everything is coming together nicely, and it’s all starting to really make a show.”

Junior Mason Strigle, who plays Adam, said learning choreography was one of the biggest challenges during rehearsals. “Rehearsals are going good! We have finished choreographing the last song and have blocked the entire show.”
Strigle added that the choreography was difficult at first but rewarding to learn. “The choreography aspect was most difficult as I’ve never done choreography before. Though I also found it really fun.”
Freshman Gray Davis, who plays Ellie as well as Savannah and Savannah’s mother, said the show highlights the variety of personalities and characters in the musical.
“I look forward to making so many memories and becoming closer to those around me! Something special about this play is the different personalities and characters that we show in the musical. They are unique and are something to look forward to watching,” Davis concluded.
Freaky Friday will run April 10–12 and April 17–19 at Walsh Jesuit High School. Tickets are on sale HERE, $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
