Student Government is back at it again, this time making Walsh Jesuit more environmentally friendly one step at a time. As many students know, WJ has joined the Ignation Carbon Challenge to improve its global understanding and to reduce its carbon footprint. As a Catholic high school, the community is also trying to follow Pope Francis as he encourages all to be more responsible stewards of creation.

Walsh Jesuit has taken a major step by adding water bottle filling stations to the original water fountains. In just a few short days, the campus has already eliminated hundreds of plastic bottles. Senior Roman Gioglio and Student Government are the first to be successful in making this happen.

Roman observed, “With these new stations, Walsh can eliminate the need for plastic water bottles completely!” He has been a driving force in reducing campus waste as well as introducing the Ignation Carbon Challenge. He added, “The student body will be hearing from the WJ Green Team in the upcoming weeks about reusable bottles and their effects.”

The filling stations were installed on Tuesday, January 3, and the reaction has been nothing but positive. Students from every grade could not be more happy about the direct effect on them. Junior Madison Kenzie said, “I save so much money because I don’t have to pay for tons of water bottles anymore.” This change is not only cost effective for the students but has also sped up the water bottle filling time between classes.

The school will continue to make strides to become more eco-friendly. The Ignation Carbon Challenge has sparked a chain reaction of enthusiasm throughout the community.
