WJ Mock Trial added more to their list of accomplishments at the District Tournament January 20, 2017.

Warriors went 2-0 at the competition. Senior, Shelby Lewis won best attorney and best witness setting a school record. Also setting a new record, Junior Grace Ruane won best attorney. These two attorneys marked the first at Walsh Jesuit to win top attorneys in both trials. Their outstanding performance moves the team to the Ohio Mock Trial Regionals for back to back years.

Senior attorney Anna Gruber comments on the teams success,”Our team lost three of its top four members last year and we were left without attorneys and witnesses with much experience, so we’re beyond thrilled.”

The team practices bi-weekly, starting in early October. This year the team works on a defamation case with regards to a news station and a politician. The Ohio Mock Trial Committee bases its’ cases off real trials with actual witnesses and testimonies.

Ashely O’ Rourke a junior on the team remarks, ” It’s actually a pretty interesting case. When you get past the nerdy reputation it can be pretty entertaining.”

The team moves forward in competition Friday February 10, 2017 as they compete in one of Ohio’s toughest districts. Sophomore Patrick Delaney claims, ” We knew how hard it was going to be to replace the talent we lost last year, but we have definitely surprised ourselves with how far we have come this year.”

The team coached by Mrs. Marquard, embarks on a journey to make history at Walsh Jesuit by advancing to the State Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. Walsh Jesuit junior, Grace Ruane interjected, “If you’re looking for an extracurricular to get involved in come sit in on Mock Trial.” She also added, ” It is one of the few clubs that doesn’t just look good on a resume, it actually teaches you speaking skills and better thought process.”
