From binge eating to binge shopping, the concept of enjoying to excess has predictably made its way to entertainment. With services such as Netflix and Hulu watching programs for hours and hours, or binge watching, has become a preferred way to view favorite shows.

Nearly 73% of Americans said they binge watch, according to a survey by Deloitte, including 90% of U.S. millennials. Some 38% of those millennials also said they binge watch every week. According to senior Easton Kindall, “It’s really easy to watch entire seasons in days. There are no commercials and no time is wasted.  Binge watching makes watching programs enjoyable.”

Each year, Netflix ranks the top shows for binge watching. According to IndiWire, the top five shows for binge watching in 2017 were “American Vandal,” “3%,” “13 Reasons Why,” “Anne with an E,” and “Riverdale.”

Senior Drew Rossiter stated, “The best show to binge watch is ‘Riverdale.’ The show is based on the characters of the Archie Comics, and it’s easy to go from episode to episode and not realize how much time has passed while watching the plot evolve.”

Junior Jeremy Davison admitted, “I watched ’13 Reasons Why’ in two days. I could not wait to find out what happened and kept watching and watching.” Another popular show, “13 Reasons Why,” received a great deal of criticism because it was about suicide., but gained more than 11 million tweets after its launch in March of 2017 according to Variety.

A Brazilian series, “3%,” is about the future when the world is divided between “progress” and “poverty.” People are given a chance to live a good life, but only 3% of the candidates succeed. People were drawn into this show because it resembles a great novel. Each episode leaves the viewer wanting more.

“Anne with an E,” a popular family show, accounts the adventures of an orphan who goes to live with a family who wanted a little boy.  The plot plays to the heart, so people watch hour after hour to see what is going to happen to Anne.

“The most popular show, “American Vandal,” is about a high school that is vandalized, but the top suspect explains his innocence and gets support from a filmmaker who helps him plead his case. “Because the topic is something that many people can relate to, the show has drawn a huge audience and because each episode ends leaving the viewer wanting more, you can’t help but continue to watch,” suggested senior Max Miotke.

The top binge worthy shows form just the tip of the iceberg. So many different types of programs appeal to many tastes.
